Youth Leadership Montgomery is a two-part program for any Montgomery County public or independent high school student entering grades 9-12. A partnership between Youth Leadership Montgomery (YLM) and Maryland Leadership Workshops (MLW) provides a program that is designed to develop leadership skills and community awareness.

Kids having fun! There are other youth programs available for high school students, but there is no comprehensive program that has as profound an impact. YLM empowers students with the skills necessary to achieve success in all facets of their lives, and inspires them to exercise their leadership to enhance their schools and communities.

Up to 25 students will be selected on a competitive basis. Participants need to complete both parts in order to graduate. See application for attendance policy and dates.

No school credit will be provided for participation; however, those who complete the program will be presented a certificate of graduation. Students will also be provided letters of recommendation from program leaders.

COST

$750 covers all program costs, including one-week residential program, facilitated by Maryland Leadership Workshops at Washington College, Chestertown, MD. WHAT GRADUATES, PARENTS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS SAY ABOUT THE PROGRAM
"Youth Leadership Montgomery is an exciting opportunity for our County's young people. As both a graduate and mentor to others in Leadership Montgomery, I can attest to the strength of this program. As a participant, you’ll learn much about our community and your peers -- and perhaps most importantly, you'll learn a great deal about yourself. I would strongly encourage interested students to apply for this amazing opportunity to develop their leadership potential." - Dr. Charlene R. Nunley (LM '01), President, Montgomery College

"Sam's participation in the Youth Leadership Montgomery program increased her confidence and poise so that she now feels comfortable speaking publicly. She was very impressed to learn
first-hand about what it takes to start and run a nonprofit community service organization. to top it off, she had fun -- a totally positive experience."- Harriet Guttenberg (LM '92), Grandmother of Samantha Havas

"YLM gave me the opportunity to have hands on involvement in the community and gain a better understanding of what it takes to run a nonprofit organization. The experience gave me added confidence and skills to communicate in front of groups of people. I would recommend it to any teen who wants to take an active role in giving back to their community." - Sam Havas, Bullis School

"Youth Leadership Montgomery offered the opportunity to expand and exchange ideas with high school peers in a creative and nurturing environment. It challenged my daughter's future dreams by introducing committed individuals with vision." - Francine Waters (LM '05), Parent

Youth Leadership Montgomery is an outstanding example of a community investing in its future by preparing the leaders of tomorrow. Montgomery County is fortunate to have such a dynamic, adolescent-centered program, not only to address the needs of our community, but also to strengthen the future of our state and nation." - Dr. Jerry D. Weast (LM '01), Superintendent, Montgomery County Public Schools

"Youth Leadership Montgomery took me out of my comfort zone and helped me realize my potential at being an important individual in the community. Throughout the program, I made friends in the County and because of the camp I made several more friends out of the County. I will never forget them and I hope they won’t forget me.- Matt Splain, Sherwood High School

"Youth Leadership Montgomery was a uniquely worthwhile experience for my daughter, a senior in the MCPS school system. As much as she does extremely well academically in school, the additional exposure to peers from different racial/ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, exercises in leadership skills, and discussions of current social issues have greatly expanded her horizon and, we believe, better prepare her for life beyond high school." - Betty Lam, Parent
